Srikkanth slams Gambhir after Sooryavanshi's explosive comeback
Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has hit out at Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir for the way teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was managed during India's recent T20I series against England. Srikkanth felt that the young opener deserved a longer run in the playing XI rather than being sidelined after a handful of low scores.
Srikkanth's remarks come after Sooryavanshi announced he played a gutsy knock during India's opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare. Chasing a modest target of 126, the 15-year-old blasted a marvellous innings, smashing his maiden international half-century in 18 deliveries. His fearless knock included four boundaries and four sixes that made a big impact in India's dominant seven-wicket victory.
“He has an effortless range of shots, yet not one shot was cross-batted. This boy is really something special. How did Gautam Gambhir foolishly drop him, of all people, after three failures to crush his confidence?” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
The innings against Zimbabwe served as a magnificent comeback for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who had endured a difficult start to his international career. During the preceding T20I series against England, Sooryavanshi managed scores of 14, 13, and 15 in his first three outings, which forced the management to drop him from the playing XI. Meanwhile, Srikkanth lauded Sooryavanshi's dedication and efforts to bounce back nicely.
“I salute Vaibhav for his dedication. After the England series, he didn't go home and instead went straight to the Rajasthan Royals camp. He has been working on his batting against the short ball because he wants to prove to the whole world that he is special,” Srikkanth said.
