Under-fire Pakistan fined for slow-over rate
Pakistan have been punished with dual sanctions for maintaining a slow over-rate during the third and final Test against England in Birmingham. In a crushing blow, the side has been docked 11 World Test Championship points, and players have been fined 50 per cent of their match fee. Pakistan are already reeling from a 3-0 series defeat, with the latest development adding to the list of problems for the side.
The side was deemed to be 11 overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees slapped the penalty, after on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren levelled the charge. The sanctions were imposed in line with Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions, which penalises a team one championship point for every over it fails to complete within the stipulated time, and Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, in which players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to complete.
Talking about the series, Pakistan failed to challenge England across all three matches, losing them hugely to lose the series 3-0. After the defeat in the second Test at Lord’s. PCB also took a major decision, releasing seven players and removing head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul.
