Matthew Wade calls time on BBL career

Veteran cricketer Matthew Wade has announced his retirement from the Big Bash League after almost 15 years in the tournament. The former Australia wicketkeeper-batter has decided to depart the Hobart Hurricanes, bringing to an end a journey of nine seasons with the franchise. Wade called time on his international career back in 2024, but he went on to play the BBL.
Notably, Wade began his Big Bash League career with the Melbourne Stars; later, he turned out for the Melbourne Renegades. And finally, he found a long-term home in Hobart Hurricanes, where he became a powerful figure, playing a central role in the team’s campaigns over the years. He represented Hobart in 90 matches, scoring 2,446 runs at an average of 32.18 and a strike rate of 146.73.
Following Wade's decision, Hurricanes head coach Jeff Vaughan praised his competitive spirit.
“‘Wadey’ is one of those cricketers you always wanted on your side,” Vaughan said.
“He competed incredibly hard every time he walked onto the field and had the ability to change a game very quickly, but equally important has been what he has passed on to the players around him. He has a fantastic cricket brain and has always been willing to share his knowledge and challenge those around him to get better.”
Matthew Wade represented Australia in 36 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is, scoring 1613, 1867 and 1202 runs, respectively.
