Learoyd and Voll star as Sydney Thunder begin WBBL season in style

Sydney Thunder kicked off their Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) campaign with a convincing six-wicket victory over Melbourne Renegades at Junction Oval on Thursday. Anika Learoyd starred with a career-best 48 off 37 balls, while Georgia Voll produced an impressive all-round performance to help Thunder secure the win with 18 balls to spare. Batting first, Melbourne Renegades managed 138/9 in their 20 overs. Opener Hayley Matthews led the scoring with an aggressive 45 off 30 deliveries, building a 56-run opening partnership with Courtney Webb. Georgia Wareham also contributed 23 off 19 balls. However, Renegades struggled towards the end of their innings, losing five wickets for just two runs across seven balls in the 17th and 18th overs. Voll was instrumental in the collapse, claiming four wickets and contributing to a run-out.
In response, Sydney Thunder started steadily, with Voll scoring 25 off 18 balls, including the team's only six. Learoyd then took control of the innings, smashing nine boundaries and forming a crucial 62-run partnership with Heather Knight for the third wicket. The duo capitalised on the power surge, collecting 28 runs to bring Thunder closer to victory. Knight and Nadine de Klerk subsequently guided the team home comfortably to seal the six-wicket win.
After the match, Learoyd admitted that batting near the top of the order made her feel nervous but said the performance had given her confidence for the season ahead. "Probably a little bit of belief, I think," she told Fox Cricket, expressing hope that her innings would help her trust her abilities. She also praised Voll's contribution, describing her as a valuable all-rounder who consistently supports the team with the bat, ball, and in the field. The victory provides Sydney Thunder with an encouraging start to their WBBL campaign, while Melbourne Renegades will need to address their late-innings collapse before their next fixture.
