Justin Greaves' fighting knock guides West Indies to famous draw
The first Test between New Zealand and the West Indies ended in a gripping draw at Hagley Oval on Saturday, with West Indies batters Justin Greaves and Kemar Roach anchoring the side through challenging phases. Chasing a huge target of 531, West Indies eked out 457/6 by stumps on Day 5, though not registering victory but holding on to claim a hard-fought draw. For New Zealand, who have been plagued by injuries in their seam attack, it was a lost chance to convert a dominant position into a win.
After New Zealand were bundled out for 231 in their first innings, West Indies responded with 167. In their second innings, the home side piled on the runs, courtesy of big hundreds from Tom Latham (145) and Rachin Ravindra (176), before declaring at 466/8, setting West Indies a formidable target of 531.
In reply, West Indies reached 212/4 at close of play on Day 4, with Shai Hope unbeaten on 116 and Justin Greaves not out on 55. On day 5, West Indies were in with perfect determination. Hope scored a composed 140 before being dismissed during the second hour before lunch. Greaves, on the other hand, showed great resolve. West Indies’ lower-order resistance and time spent at the crease eventually saw them through. By stumps, West Indies mustered 457/6, ending the match in a draw.
