Ireland have suffered a big blow as skipper Paul Stirling was forced off the field with a knee injury during their Group B clash with Australia in Colombo on Wednesday. The team now faces a nervous wait for the results of medical scans that will determine the severity of the injury and Stirling’s availability for the remainder of the tournament. Stirling hurt his right knee while completing a catch during Australia's innings.

Later in the match, he tried to bat as an opener during Ireland’s chase of a challenging target of 183, but he was visibly troubled by the injury and retired hurt after attempting a single. Ireland, meanwhile, lost the match by 67 runs, making it their second successive defeat in the group stage. Speaking after the game, batting coach Gary Wilson confirmed that Stirling had been sent for scans to assess the extent of the knee problem.

"It doesn't look great. He went for a scan this evening, so we'll have to wait to get confirmation. But yeah, I would say it doesn't look ideal," Wilson said.

Wilson highlighted Stirling’s determination when asked why he came out to bat.

"He thought he was OK when he went out there to bat. He wasn't going to go out if he didn't think he was right. And He was trying to maximise the Powerplay, basically. He was trying to take off for a single, but clearly the knee seized up even more," he said.

"Paul is a tough character. I think credit to him that he knew going out there that he was probably not quite right, and he still tried to go out there and get the job done for the team. As I said, unfortunately it wasn't to be tonight," Wilson said.
