Defending champions India have upset New Zealand, delivering a spectacular performance to overpower the Black Caps by a massive 96 runs in the final of the Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium. With this commanding victory, India have etched their name in history, becoming the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title on home soil and the first side to win back-to-back titles in the tournament’s history. Overall, this also marks India’s third T20 World Cup title win.

After being asked to bat first, India unleashed batting carnage, piling up a mammoth 255/5 in 20 overs, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Leading the charge was dashing opener Sanju Samson, who produced a magnificent knock of 89 runs, the highest individual score in a T20 World Cup final. Samson anchored the innings brilliantly, dismantling the New Zealand bowling attack with powerful hitting.

India’s momentum was further accelerated by Abhishek Sharma, who smoked an explosive cameo. Sharma smashed the fastest half-century of the tournament, reaching the milestone in 18 balls, battering New Zealand's clueless bowlers. The fireworks continued with valuable contributions from Ishan Kishan, who scored a blistering 54 off 25 balls, and Shivam Dube, who provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 26 off 8 deliveries.

Chasing a daunting target of 256, New Zealand never fully recovered after a shaky start. They lost wickets at regular intervals, failing to build meaningful partnerships. Although Tim Seifert fought hard and scored an impressive 52 from 26 balls, his efforts lacked sufficient support from the rest of the batting lineup. Meanwhile, as the innings progressed, India’s bowlers tightened their grip on the match, demolishing New Zealand's batting order.

The pressure continued to mount as wickets fell in quick succession, with New Zealand losing the plot completely. Amid a sea of blue and the roaring crowd, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. For India, ever-dangerous Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel delivered outstanding performance in the bowling department, taking four and three wickets, respectively.
