Women's T20 World Cup: Shreyanka Patil stretchered off after ankle injury

India's successful campaign at the Women's T20 World Cup has been overshadowed by a major injury concern after all-rounder Shreyanka Patil was stretchered off the field during the match against the Netherlands in Leeds on Wednesday. Patil picked up a painful right ankle injury while trying to stop a ball in her very first over of the innings.

The incident occurred shortly after Patil delivered the opening ball of her spell. As the Netherlands batter Phebe Molkenboer nudged the ball towards the mid-on region, the Indian off-spinner sprinted across in an effort to prevent a single. While changing direction and moving towards the ball, she appeared to twist her right ankle awkwardly and immediately collapsed to the ground in visible discomfort.

Medical staff rushed onto the field as Patil clutched her ankle and struggled to move. After receiving treatment on the field, she was placed on a stretcher and taken off for further medical assessment.

“Shreyanka Patil picked up an injury while attempting to field the ball and was stretchered off the field. We wish her a speedy recovery as we await further updates,” the BCCI said in a statement.

This is incredibly frustrating for Patil, who spent more than a year recovering from multiple injuries before earning her place in India's World Cup squad. Moreover, she has played a crucial role in India's spin department.
