Australian opener Nic Maddinson, making his return to the Test side after 10 years, recorded a disappointing start after being bowled for a 33-ball duck by Marco Jansen on day one of the first Test between South Africa and Australia in Durban on Friday.

Maddison, who opened the batting alongside Travis Head, struggled to deal with South Africa’s bowling attack and finally chopped a cut shot onto his stumps to depart without scoring. With the disappointing start, Maddinson also registered an unwanted record, becoming the only Australian opener in Test history to have recorded the longest duck.

Meanwhile, the all-time record for the longest duck by an opener is held by former New Zealand cricketer Darrin Murray, who recorded a 39-ball duck against Sri Lanka in 1995. Maddinson’s selection in Australia’s Test side had also come as a surprise after he played his last Test back in 2016 before being overlooked. Moreover, Maddison hadn’t also featured in first-class cricket since March 2025.

Australia XI: Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

South Africa XI: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickleton, David Bedingham, Temba Bavuma (c), Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verryenne, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, Andrich Nortje
