"It obviously is a big responsibility": Shubman Gill on being named India's ODI captain

As India gear up to face West Indies in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the team carries the momentum of a dominant win in the first Test. Heading into the second game, India are hoping to sweep the series 2-0. Beyond the red-ball game, India's upcoming ODI series against Australia has grabbed much of the attention, as it marks the long-awaited return of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the Indian team. The duo, who have been the pillars of Indian cricket for more than a decade, are set to rejoin the national setup following their last appearance at the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. Ahead of the second Test, India’s batting star Shubman Gill spoke about the significance of having the veterans back in the squad.
"The experience that they both have and the matches that they won for India. There are very few players who have won so many matches for India. There are very few players in the world who have the same skill, the same quality, and the same experience. So, in that sense, I'm very happy," Gill said during the press conference ahead of the 2nd Test.
Last week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. The announcement comes ahead of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, scheduled to begin on October 19. Speaking on being handed the ODI reins, Gill revealed that he knew about the big decision, as he was told a little earlier.
“Yes, it was announced in the middle of a Test match, but I got to know a little before that. It obviously is a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. So, very excited to lead my country in that format.”
