Sydney Thunder will be without New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson for the remainder of the ongoing Big Bash League after the experienced speedster suffered a calf injury while playing in ILT20 for Desert Vipers in United Arab Emirates. The club confirmed on Tuesday that Ferguson will not recover in time to take part in BBL|15, dealing a significant blow to their pace attack.

"We’re gutted that Lockie won’t be with us this year. Not only does he bowl 150km/h with an incredible amount of experience in all conditions, but he is genuinely one of the best humans in cricket and added so much to our squad culturally, too," Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said.

"We wish Lockie all the best in the recovery ahead of the World Cup and hope to one day see him back playing for the Thunder Nation."

Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder have roped in England all-rounder David Willey as a replacement for Lockie Ferguson, who will now turn his attention to regaining full fitness ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup. New Zealand are scheduled to begin their campaign on February 8 with a clash against Afghanistan in Chennai. The T20 World Cup will begin on February 7.
