India crush England, claim Under-19 World Cup title
India, delivering a scintillating performance, crushed England by 100 runs in the Under-19 World Cup final on Friday in Harare, sealing the title in a dominant fashion. India's victory was made possible by a record-breaking display with the bat and a ruthless spell with the ball. Deciding to bat, India had a fiery start with young prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi displaying a breathtaking batting exhibition. Suryavanshi tore into the English bowling attack with a stunning 175 off 80 deliveries.
His knock powered India to a colossal total of 411/9 in 50 overs. This was the highest ever total registered in a knockout match at an Under-19 World Cup. Suryavanshi, meanwhile, achieved multiple milestones, recording the fastest century ever in an Under-19 World Cup final and becoming the first batter to score 150 or more in the championship match. Captain Ayush Mhatre also scored a composed 53 off 51 balls.
Pursuing a target of 412, England’s chase failed to get momentum from a dramatic collapse in the middle overs despite having a promising start and a fluent half-century from Ben Dawkins (66 off 56). There was, however, a ray of hope for England in the form of Caleb Falconer, who launched a spirited counterattack, compiling a superb 115 to briefly revive hopes of an improbable comeback. However, wickets continued to tumble as England were dismissed for 311 in 40.2 overs.
